As the pace picks up after the Lunar New Year holidays and heading towards the month of Vesakha (April-May), Nalandians will get busier with educational and community outreach programmes in the coming weeks. It is time again for members to attend important meetings to discuss and plan for the year ahead. Nalanda Buddhist Society is happy to invite members to the following meetings:
Over the Christmas weekend from 24 to 26 December, Nalanda Dhamma School (NDS) facilitators went to Kuala Selangor for their three-day annual get-together. This year, the 25 facilitators from Serdang, Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru branches were joined by 10 Nalanda youths at the retreat.
A few days before Lunar New Year, the Director of Nalanda Institute Achariya Tan Siang Chye hosted a dinner for Dhamma speaker Dr. Punna Wong from Johor Bahru. Also in attendance were senior Nalandian officers Bro. Ananda Fong, Sis. Sandy Lim and Sis. Santī Cheang. At the informal meeting, they discussed the upcoming WACANA 2017 Buddhist Conference which will be held on 1 July 2017. Dr. Wong indicated his unequivocal support for the conference, which is themed “The Buddha Word – Discovering the Essential”.
The few days leading to the arrival of Lunar New Year have traditionally been a time for Nalandians to gather to wish each other a joyful celebration before everyone heads home for reunion with family and friends. On Tuesday 24 January, the New Year ‘couplet’ was unveiled before the start of evening chanting in the Shrine Hall at Nalanda Centre. It was indeed a lively and cheerful event for devotees in Sri Serdang.
Nalanda Institute officers have been meeting for the past few months to prepare for WACANA 2017 – the premier Malaysian conference where the Sangha and laity gather to discuss pertinent issues that affect the Buddhist movement. This year’s WACANA Conference will be the fifth since 2007. It is scheduled to be held on Saturday, 1 July 2017, in Subang Jaya, Selangor. The theme for the conference is “The Buddha Word – Discovering the Essential”.
In conjunction with Nalanda ‘Education Day’, 35 Nalanda officers gathered at Nalanda Centre on 12 December 2016 for the second-ever Nalanda Education Workshop. The aim of the workshop was to chart and align the direction of all Nalanda education divisions in accordance with the ‘Nalanda Education Philosophy’.
The Nalanda Education Team (N.E.T.) gathered tonight for its first monthly meeting of 2017. N.E.T. Chairman Achariya Vijaya Samarawickrama led the discussions on Dhamma-learning programmes planned for the year, including the upcoming WACANA Buddhist Conference scheduled on 1 July.
Nalanda founder Bro. Tan officially resumed his work this morning at Nalanda Centre after being away for a month on pilgrimage and retreat. His first formal activity today was a meeting with Achariya S. Vijaya, Chairman of Nalanda Education Team, to discuss upcoming courses and programmes. This will be followed by meetings with the Society’s leadership, management, and members. We warmly welcome Bro. Tan back to Sri Serdang.
Twenty-six Nalanda officers are spending the long Deepavali weekend attending a special retreat in Klang, Selangor. This is the second annual leadership retreat which involves Executive Committee members and all branch leaders.
