Paris remembered

A year ago tomorrow – on 13 November 2015 – a group of “Islamic State” (“IS”) terrorists launched a series of coordinated attacks across Paris and Saint-Denis, killing 130 people and injuring hundreds more.  The loss of innocent lives is still a very painful memory for France, and especially so for the victims’ families.  We stand in solidarity with French citizens in commemorating this tragic event – another dark day in the annals of humanity.  May the deceased rest in Peace; and may all beings be free from suffering.

Nalanda pays tribute to King Bhumibol

It has been a week since the passing of the beloved King Bhumibol Adulyadej, and the people of Thailand are slowly coming to terms with this great loss and collective grief. The void in their hearts created by the king’s demise cannot be quickly or easily filled. Time alone can heal.

Commemorating Prof. T. W. Rhys Davids

On Sunday 4 September, the Director of Pustaka Nalanda Bro. Ananda Fong gave a talk on the contributions of Professor Thomas William Rhys Davids (1843 – 1922), founder of the Pāli Text Society (PTS) based in London.  This was part of Pustaka Nalanda’s programme to commemorate historical personalities who had contributed significantly to the propagation of Buddhism over the last century.

Tribute to two eminent teachers

Today is the third anniversary of the passing of eminent Pāli Scholar, Venerable Kakkapalliye Anuruddha Nayaka Thero, and renowned meditation teacher, Acharya Satya Narayan Goenka.  Nalandians held a simple tribute to both teachers last night after our weekly meditation session.

15 years after September 11th

Today marks 15 years since the worst terrorist attacks on the United States of America; the incident is commonly referred to as the September 11th attacks.  Almost 3,000 people lost their lives when four airplanes were hijacked and used as weapons to kill innocent lives and cause great damage to properties.

He who lived wisely inspires eternally

The late Venerable K. Sri Dhammananda continues to inspire many Buddhists even 10 years after his death.  The memorial service held in his honour yesterday was testimony to that – the large crowd that attended the service occupied 3 floors of Nalanda Centre.

Cherished memories of four friends

Today we commemorate the 7th death anniversary of Sis. G.G. Tan, Sis. Julie Ang, Sis. Jennie Cheong, and Sis. Lee Ah Yem.  The four Dhamma friends passed away in an accident while traversing through Ladakh, India on a visit to perform charitable work there.

In Memoriam – Ooi Sock Khoong

Today marks the first anniversary of Nalanda member Sis. Ooi Sock Khoong’s passing.  She was an exemplary Nalandian who was very committed to Buddhist education, and had volunteered her services as a tutor at Nalanda Centre.  We request all Nalandians to dedicate merits to Sis. Sock Khoong who had contributed selflessly to the Buddha-Sāsana.  May she be free from suffering, and be at peace always.  Sotthi.
