On Saturday 1 October, the UPM Buddhist Society (PBUPM) celebrated its 50th anniversary with an appreciation dinner in Shah Alam attended by its members, past and present. The society was established in 1966 by staff members of then College of Agriculture Malaya, which was upgraded in 1973 to University of Agriculture Malaysia (in Malay, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia or UPM). In 1998, its name changed again to Universiti Putra Malaysia.
On Sunday 17 May, Malaysian religious groups held a joint prayer session in Kuala Lumpur for the earthquake victims in Nepal. The devastating quakes killed more than 8,600 people and caused untold damages to the country’s infrastructure. Representatives of the Buddhist, Hindu, Christian and Muslim communities took turns to recite chants or prayers on stage, witnessed by a large congregation.
Over the weekend on 11 and 12 April, Nalanda Youth Centre was honoured to host the plenary meeting for members of the National Buddhist Undergraduate Community Service Programme, which is under the direction of the Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia (YBAM).
On 10 October, Nalanda Founder Bro. Tan was invited to Central Kedah Buddhist Association in Sungai Petani to give a keynote presentation on the “Buddhist Presence in Kedah”. The special talk was in conjunction with the Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia’s “Dharma Walk” programme held at the same venue. On Sunday 28 September, Bro. Ooi Chin Chye and Sis. Teh Soo Tyng, Manager of “Eastern Horizon” Buddhist magazine, visited Nalanda Centre in Sri Serdang. They were warmly received by Nalanda’s Honorary Secretary Sis. Buddhinī and Nalanda officers.
After attending a dialogue session with UPM Buddhist Society at Nalanda Centre on 23 May, Bro. Sek Chin Yong, Vice President of the Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia (YBAM), made a courtesy call at Nalanda Founder Bro. Tan where they had a brief exchange on youth matters.
On Friday 23 May, Nalanda Centre hosted a dialogue session between Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Buddhist Society and the Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia’s Vice President Bro. Sek Chin Yong, and UPM alumnus Bro. Yang.
The Inter-varsity Young Buddhist Coordinating Council (全国大专佛青协调委员会) under the auspices of the Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia (YBAM), held a meeting from 24 to 26 January at Tusita Hermitage (兜率天修行林), Sarawak.
On Sunday 3 November, Nalanda Centre welcomed several groups of visitors, both monks and laity. In the morning, we received senior officers from the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) – Vice President RAdm Dato’ Danyal Balagopal Abdullah (Rtd) and Treasurer Mr. Yong Choo Kong. They were met by Bro.Tan and brought around for a building tour. Also at the meeting were Datin Seri Mah Ming Yuet and Bro. Chim Siew Choon, President of Theravada Buddhist Council of Malaysia.
