On Sunday 30 October, Nalandians gathered to listen to a talk by the Director of Pustaka Nalanda Bro. Ananda Fong on the “Significance of Sangha Day”, which is observed at Nalanda every November.

Bro. Ananda shared about the sublime qualities of the Sangha, with reference to the well-known Māha-Parinibbāna Sutta. Members of the Ariya-Sangha were preservers of the Dhamma; they were well-disciplined and abided by the appropriate conduct, living in accordance to the Dhamma.

Bro. Ananda spoke about the qualities of the Sangha.

Bro. Ananda also spoke about the ‘rains retreat’ when Sangha members spend a period of three months in seclusion.  The retreat concludes with the ‘Pavarana’ ceremony and the ‘Kathina’ robe offering.

Thus, ‘Sangha Day’ is an important occasion for the lay community to honour the virtues and contributions of the Mahā Sangha.  It is an opportunity for devotees to express gratitude and to support the community of monks and nuns.  We are grateful to Bro. Ananda for the informative talk.  Sadhu anumodana.
