On Sunday 23 August, students from Nalanda Free School attended the first session of the SPM English Oral Workshop, conducted by English language teachers from the Centre for the Advancement of Language Competency (CALC), Universiti Putra Malaysia. The four-session workshop aims to familiarise students with the oral examination format, strengthen their communication skills, and build their confidence in speaking English.

The first session, conducted by Ms. Kauselya and Mr. Jackson Wong, featured interactive speaking activities and guided practice. Students learned useful communication skills and techniques to help them understand questions, organise their thoughts, and respond with greater confidence. Working in groups, they took turns playing the roles of interlocutor and candidate using sample examination questions. At the end of the session, students also reflected on their own performance and provided feedback to their peers.

One useful technique introduced was ‘P.R.E.’, which helps students develop and elaborate on their responses. ‘P’ stands for Point – the key idea they wish to express; ‘R’ stands for Reason – why they chose that point; and ‘E’ stands for Example – an illustration that supports and completes their response. Through this simple structure, students learned to express their ideas more clearly and meaningfully.

The students enjoyed learning and practising together, and benefited greatly from the engaging session. We extend our sincere appreciation to Ms. Kauselya and Mr. Jackson for generously sharing their time and expertise in coaching our students. We look forward to the second session of the workshop this Sunday, 6 September, and wish our students continued progress as they gear up for their SPM English Oral Examination.
