On Sunday 7 December, Dr. Phang Cheng Kar gave a Dhamma talk during the morning service, on ‘Training to be Simple’ as part of the ‘Happy Mind, Happy Life’ series. Simplicity is not merely about doing or owning less, but about letting go of unnecessary demands, distractions, and cravings. With less desires, we can then cultivate contentment, moderation, seclusion, and wisdom, guided by Right View and Right Effort. A simple life, creates space for reflection, meaningful connections, inner peace, clarity, and the arising of wisdom.
Dr. Phang also debunked common myths about simplicity, emphasising that it is not laziness, naivety, poverty, a minimalist trend, nor something reserved only for the monastic community. Instead, it is a form of wise and purposeful effort. He encouraged attendees to embrace simplicity through mindful living, kind speech, gratitude, and prioritise meaningful activities such as self-care, and associating with the wise.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Phang for his light-hearted and thought-provoking sharing, and for the practical guidance that we can readily apply in daily lives. By decluttering both externally and internally, may we create supportive conditions for peace, joy, and spiritual growth. Sādhu!
