Buddha Day or ‘Wesak Day’ commemorates the Enlightenment of the Buddha – His liberation from ignorance and suffering. This event took place over 27 centuries ago on the full-moon day in the lunar month of Vesakhā, which falls between April and May in our conventional calendar.
After His Enlightenment, the Buddha wandered through many parts of northern India for 45 years, compassionately disseminating the message of peace without any discrimination. The Buddha left behind a rich legacy of teachings – the ‘Dhamma-Vinaya’.
In order to pay tribute to the Buddha, we dedicate Wesak Day to learn, understand and reflect on His teachings. We can also honour the Buddha and his teachings through acts of kindness in our thoughts, speech, action as well as by purifying the mind.
We encourage all to make Buddha Day a meaningful observance, upholding wisdom and compassion, for the welfare and happiness of oneself and all beings. Namo Buddhaya!
