Ajahn Buddhadāsa’s 120th birth anniversary

Today we commemorate the 120th birth anniversary of Ajahn Buddhadāsa Indapañño, one of the most notable Buddhist teachers of the 20th century.  Ajahn Buddhadāsa was born on 27 May 1906 in Chaiya, Southern Thailand.  He renounced the worldly life at age 20 and led an exemplary life of an ascetic bhikkhu until his passing. He founded Suan Mokh, the first modern forest monastery in Thailand in 1932.

Ajahn Buddhadāsa was well recognised and respected for his dedication to the fundamental elements of the Buddha’s teachings.  He advocated a simple and straight practice in accordance with the Buddha’s core teachings, and avoided the traditional ritualism.

Ajahn Buddhadāsa’s philosophy, way of life, and teachings continue to have a positive influence on the development of Thai Buddhist movement.  As we celebrate this great Teacher’s legacy, let’s continue to deepen our Dhamma practice in our daily lives.
