On Wednesday 25 September, devotees gathered at Nalanda Education & Outreach (NEO) Johor Bahru for the weekly meditation session. The evening began with offerings, chanting, meditation, and followed by a Dhamma talk by Sis. Nandini Tan.
In her talk, Sis. Nandini reminded participants that meditation is not merely about sitting quietly, but about cultivating the mind. Through consistent practice, one develops mindfulness and awareness, the essential qualities for living with wisdom and compassion.
She explained that the reason we need to practise meditation is because our lives are often driven by habitual tendencies rooted in greed, hatred, and delusion. These defilements shape our likes and dislikes, which in turn influence how we react to situations. Without mindfulness, we are easily led by these patterns, resulting in unwholesome actions and suffering.
To deepen the reflection, Sis. Nandini also shared the three levels of defilements, which are vitikamma (transgression) kilesa, pariyutthāna (arising) kilesa, and anusaya (latent) kilesa. She highlighted that understanding these layers helps us realise why constant cultivation is necessary, as practice gradually weakens the grip of defilements on the mind.
