With heavy hearts, we extend our prayers and loving-kindness to all those affected by the powerful earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture on Japan’s Kyushu Island on Tuesday.  As of Thursday, the disaster has claimed at least 34 lives, injured many others, and forced thousands of residents to leave their homes.  Rescue teams continue to search tirelessly for survivors amidst collapsed buildings, damaged infrastructure, and continuing aftershocks, while many evacuees face the added hardship of extreme summer heat.

As thousands take shelter in evacuation centres and communities work together to support those in need, let us respond with compassion and solidarity.  May those who have lost their loved ones find strength and comfort, may the injured recover swiftly, and may all those displaced receive the care, protection, and support they need during this difficult time.  We also extend our heartfelt mettā to the rescue personnel, medical teams, volunteers, and all who are serving tirelessly under challenging conditions. May they remain safe, healthy, and steadfast in their noble efforts.

May all beings affected by this tragedy be free from suffering and fear.  May those who have lost their lives be at Peace. Sotthi.
