31 August 2026 marked 20 years since the passing of Venerable Dr. Kirinde Sri Dhammananda Nāyaka Maha Thera. On this significant occasion, over 200 devotees gathered at Nalanda Centre to honour our late Spiritual Adviser, recollect his profound legacy, and pay tribute to his life, teachings, and enduring Dhammaduta spirit.
The 20th Memorial Observance commenced with the traditional procession of Venerable’s robe, followed by asking for forgiveness, offerings and chanting. A video tribute and special forum featuring his direct disciples – Professor Datuk Seri Dr. Victor Wee, Datuk Charlie Chia and Bro. Benny Liow – brought to life cherished memories of Venerable’s immense kindness, compassion, wisdom and wit. They recalled his remarkable ability to listen, connect and unite people across generations and Buddhist traditions. Despite being honoured as Chief High Priest of Malaysia and recognised as an authority on Buddhism, he remained humble and down-to-earth.

Deepest appreciation for the presence of Ven. B. Sri Saranankara Nayaka Maha Thera, Ven. Dr. Santacitto and Ven. Siriwimala.
Above all, his disciples highlighted his unwavering dedication to propagating the Dhamma. He never turned down an invitation to teach, driven by a mission greater than himself. His tireless efforts contributed greatly to the growth of Theravāda Buddhism in Malaysia and the Asia-Pacific region, while his book What Buddhists Believe reached readers worldwide. Many Buddhist societies established under his spiritual guidance since the 1960s continue to benefit generations today.
As Sis. Nandinī Tan, Chairperson of the K. Sri Dhammananda 20th Memorial Observance, reminded us, may we embody kataññu and katavedi – recognising the kindness received and responding through wholesome action. By serving others, practising the Dhamma, and living with purpose, compassion and harmony, we continue the legacy he began.

The late Venerable’s robe was then ceremonially carried by Professor Datuk Seri Dr. Victor Wee in a short procession from K. Sri Dhammananda Centre to Nalanda Centre, accompanied by Nalanda members

Ven. Dhammananda often reminded us: “The purpose of our life is to do some service to others. Without serving others, we cannot serve ourselves.” This spirit of service was something he embodied throughout his life. Perhaps one of the most meaningful ways we can remember him today is not merely to say, “Thank you, Bhante,” but to continue serving as he did.
