On Sunday 27 July, Achariya Vijaya Samarawickrama gave a special lecture on ‘The Origin of Religion’ at Nalanda Youth Centre, a topic of interest to understand the relationship between man and religion.
Ach. Vijaya expounded on how the evolution of man brought about the need for religion and also their respective beliefs on how the universe began. He spoke enthusiastically about the Buddha’s perspective of the early universe and how it aligns with scientific advancements. Achariya even brought ancient specimens of fossils and old charts to share scientific understanding of how life began.
However, he reminded everyone that rather than wasting our time trying to figure out the starting point of the human realm on Earth, we should focus on the core of the Buddha’s teachings, which is to free ourselves from the root causes of suffering — lobha, dosa and moha — instead of chasing blindly for our purpose in this world.
The youths gained invaluable insight on how religion can define a person’s understanding about the beginning of life, as well as how insignificant it would be to seek our beginnings in this endless cycle of Samsara. We express our gratitude towards Ach. Vijaya for sharing his vast knowledge with clarity and vigour, and inspiring everyone to progress on this path to liberation step-by-step. Sadhu!
