Rediscovering Kedah Tua through Buddhist inscriptions

Rediscovering Kedah Tua through Buddhist inscriptions

Our utmost gratitude to Dr. Ooi for his insightful lecture on ancient Kedah.

On Saturday 25 April, Nalanda Institute Malaysia was honourd to host a special lecture by Dr. Ooi Eng Jin, Dean of the Faculty of Buddhist Studies at International Buddhist College, attended by over 80 Dhamma friends and history enthusiasts.

The session brought participants on a journey through the discoveries of the Bujang Valley, shedding light on the ancient civilisation known as Kedah Tua, which flourished between the 2nd and 14th centuries CE.  This early kingdom played a vital role as a maritime hub linking the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea, with the Bujang Valley serving as a key political and cultural centre, particularly during the Srivijaya period.

Commencing with offerings, taking the Three Refuges and observing the Five Precepts.

A comprehensive and insightful lecture on Buddhist inscriptions found in ancient Kedah and how they demonstrate the religious ceremonies and thoughts of its time.

Dr. Ooi’s talk focused on significant Buddhist inscriptions such as Ye Dharma, Ajnanac Ciyate Karma, Bodhigarbhalankara Dharani, and Sāgaramatiparipṛcchā, discovered at sites including Bukit Merriam, Bukit Choras, and Gua Berhala.  Dating from the 6th to 9th centuries, these inscriptions point to the presence of active Mahāyāna Buddhist communities and sustained ritual traditions.

The lecture also drew a range of participant questions, including on the linguistic evolution from Pallava to Kawi script in Buddhist inscriptions, archaeological investigations of the vanished coastline, and the use of satellite imaging. The lively exchange led to a dynamic and thought-provoking discussion.

We thank Dr. Ooi for an insightful session that deepened appreciation for preserving our Buddhist heritage.
