On Sunday 31 May 2026, millions of Buddhists around the world will commemorate the Birth, Enlightenment, and Parinibbāna of the Buddha — a sacred occasion known as Wesak or Buddha Day. It is the most significant day in the Buddhist calendar, carrying a profound sense of spirituality, reflection, and gratitude.
In recent years, humanity has faced immense suffering through disasters, conflicts, environmental crises, and growing social divisions. Despite remarkable advances in science, technology, and material prosperity, many people continue to experience anxiety, dissatisfaction, and uncertainty. This reminds us that material progress alone cannot guarantee genuine happiness or inner peace.
The Buddha taught that suffering arises not only from external conditions, but also from the unwholesome roots of greed, hatred, and delusion (lobha, dosa, moha). Rather than relying on wishful thinking, the Dhamma encourages us to understand the causes of suffering and cultivate wisdom, ethical conduct, and mental development. In doing so, we can transform ourselves and contribute to greater peace and well-being for all.
The antidotes to greed, hatred, and delusion are generosity, loving-kindness, and wisdom. When nurtured, these wholesome qualities bring peace and harmony to individuals, families, communities, and society. Therefore, Nalanda maintains the Buddha Day theme as “Leading a Life of Wisdom & Compassion”.
Wisdom and compassion are inseparable qualities in Buddhist practice. Wisdom enables us to see clearly and understand reality free from confusion and selfishness, while compassion inspires kindness, patience, and care for others. Together, they become powerful forces for personal transformation and social harmony.
Today, as society moves rapidly into an age shaped by artificial intelligence, digital influence, and constant distraction, the cultivation of wisdom becomes even more essential. Technological advancement can greatly benefit humanity, but without moral clarity and compassion, it may also deepen division, confusion, and suffering. The Buddha’s teachings therefore remain timeless and urgently relevant.
This year, Nalanda is also observing the 20th anniversary of the passing away of the late Ven. K. Sri Dhammananda, one of the most respected Buddhist monk and teacher in Malaysia, and beyond. For decades, he dedicated his life tirelessly to sharing the Buddha’s teachings with clarity, compassion, and wisdom. Through his gentle conduct and unwavering commitment to the Dhamma, he inspired countless people to lead meaningful lives.
Although he is no longer physically with us, his teachings and noble example continue to inspire generations of Buddhists to walk the path of wisdom and compassion.
May this sacred Buddha Day inspire all of us to lead lives rooted in wisdom, guided by compassion, and dedicated to the welfare and happiness of all beings.
Happy Buddha Day!
