Knowing what is happening, as it is

Knowing what is happening, as it is

On Wednesday 15 July, Nalanda Johor Bahru Branch hosted its Weekly Meditation & Dhamma Talk, led by Venerable Ajahn Nandiyo. Speaking on the theme “Knowing”, Ajahn explained that while conventional knowledge is useful in daily life, the Buddha pointed to a deeper kind of knowing (ñāṇa)—direct experiential wisdom that leads to the end of suffering.

Ajahn emphasised that the essence of practice is sati-sampajañña (mindfulness and clear comprehension): simply knowing what is happening in the present moment.  By observing the body, feelings, mind and phenomena without reacting, we gradually replace habitual responses with wisdom.  Through continuous mindful knowing, we begin to see the universal characteristics of impermanence (anicca), unsatisfactoriness (dukkha), and not-self (anattā), thereby reducing attachment and suffering.

The Dhamma talk reminded participants that liberation is cultivated gradually, through hearing the Dhamma, reflecting upon it, and putting it into practice.  Ajahn concluded with a simple yet profound encouragement: “Just know what is happening, as it is.”  May we continue to develop this liberating knowing and walk the Noble Path with greater wisdom, peace and freedom.  Sādhu!
