3 months after the MH17 tragedy

Today marks three months since the tragic downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over Ukrainian airspace, while on a routine flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on 17 July.  The great loss of lives from this horrific incident is still felt by our country and people.

“Nalanda 悦刊” Mandarin Bulletin published

The Chinese-Language Communications Team has just published the 3rd issue of Nalanda’s Mandarin Bulletin – “Nalanda 悦刊”, yesterday.  The bulletin contains news on Nalanda’s recent events, essays by teachers, and interviews with volunteers.  The previous two issues of the bulletin received very encouraging support from the community due mainly to its inspiring articles.  To cater for increasing readership, 4,000 copies of Issue No.3 were printed and will be distributed nationwide this week.

Final Preparatory Meeting for Kedah Team

Members of Nalanda Sungai Petani Branch is having their final preparatory meeting in Alor Setar tonight (15 October) before they host the fund-raising concert this Saturday, 18 October, at 7.30 pm.  Nalanda members and devotees in the North have been putting in a lot of effort to plan for a successful event, so as to show their utmost appreciation to the benefactors and supporters who are coming for the concert.

‘Dhamma’ and ‘Buddhism’

“The Buddha’s original teaching is not a religion as the word is conventionally understood. The Buddha taught ‘Dhamma’ – a moral, wholesome way of life which is universal, and can be practised by anyone. He did not teach ‘Buddhism’, and was not interested in making anyone a ‘Buddhist’.”

Education Team’s 3rd Monthly Meeting

Nalanda Education Team (N.E.T.) members had their third monthly meeting on 11 October at Nalanda Centre, chaired by N.E.T. Chairman Achariya Vijaya Samarawickrama.  The N.E.T. was formed in August to gather all divisional and departmental heads of Nalanda Institute, Dharma School, Free School, and Pustaka Nalanda on one platform so as to better coordinate our educational programmes and services.  Team members had a fruitful discussion on the agenda and programme for Nalanda’s National Members’ Convention to be held this December, where “Essential Education” will be deliberated and reviewed.

Final session of ‘Mettā Bhāvanā’

The Mettā Bhāvanā’ meditation course held at NEO Centre Kuala Lumpur every Thursday has entered its 8th and final week.  Bro. Tan will be guiding the last session on 16 October.  This course provides a wonderful opportunity for Nalanda KL Branch members to understand and practise meditation for spiritual purification.

Strengthening Community Fellowship in Kedah

In early October, Nalanda Institute Malaysia organized a special study tour for BPS402 Higher Certificate students to Bujang Valley, Kedah.  The group of 40 Nalanda Institute officers and students enjoyed 3 days of compact learning in and around Sungai Petani, including at the Archaeological Museum in Merbok, and the Sungai Batu excavation site.

Nalanda Building Progress – 150th day

Today marks the 150th day since the Nalanda Centre Building Expansion Project began.  The new roof structure was installed last week, and work is progressing well on all levels.  The Building Committee is working hard to ensure the earlier hand-over of Levels 2 and 3 so as to facilitate the hosting of major upcoming events such as “Sangha Day”, holiday camps, and members’ convention.

Road Show and Community Outreach

On Sunday 5 October, Nalanda Sungai Petani Branch members organised a successful community outreach activity at the EUPE Food-court in Taman Ria Jaya, Sungai Petani.  The purpose of the road show was to promote the upcoming “Melodies for the Heart” fund-raising concert to be held there on 18 October.  The concert aims to raise funds to build the proposed Nalanda Education & Outreach (NEO) Centre in Bandar Mutiara, Sungai Petani, to serve the Buddhist community in the Northern Region. ‘Mindful’ Trip to Putrajaya

On Sunday 28 September, Nalanda Dharma School students went on a trip to Taman Putra Perdana, Putrajaya, to practise meditation outdoors.  Students started the day with chanting, followed by light physical exercise; they were then ready for meditation.  Students were introduced to ‘walking meditation’, using their movement as meditation ‘object’.  After the walking session, they continued with another round of sitting meditation.
