Have a joyful Deepavali

‘Deepavali’ (or ‘Diwali’ ) celebrates the symbolic triumph of goodness over evil; and the victory of knowledge over ignorance.  Just as light dispels darkness, even so, wisdom dispels foolishness. On this festive occasion, Nalanda Buddhist Society wishes our Hindu friends a “Joyous Deepavali” filled with amity, harmony, and peace!  Enjoy a wonderful celebration with family and friends, and discover a ‘world of brightness and light’ in others, and within ourselves.

Youths organise Dāna for venerables

On Saturday 17 October, Nalandian youths organised a lunch dāna for two venerable monks from Sentul Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple who had been invited to go on Nalanda’s monthly educational ‘Pindacāra’ (alms-round) in Seri Kembangan.  Although this was the first time the youths were taking on the responsibility, they were eager to put into practice what they had learned in the Youth Centre.

Visit by Appamādaviharī Committee Members

On Saturday 31 October, Venerable Ayya Susīlā and Appamādaviharī Meditation Centre Committee Members from Penang visited Nalanda Centre on a familiarisation tour. They were warmly greeted by Nalandians who made them welcome and gladly took them around the centre.  Ayya Susīlā and the visitors then met with senior Nalanda officers for a genial discussion on the Society’s operations and educational activities.

A verb named “Me”

“The Verb is Me” was the interesting Dhamma talk given by Achariya Tan Siang Chye on Service Sunday, 25 October.  He explained that humans exist because they are constantly changing, vibrating and moving.  In reality, humans are ‘verbs and not nouns’.

Meditation retreat for UPM students

On Sunday 25 October, a group of 30 undergraduates from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) held a meditation camp at Nalanda Centre. The one-day retreat, from 10am to 10pm, was led by Venerable Bhikshuni Ji-Chi (继持) and Venerable Bhikshuni Chi-Xiang (持向).

Discover the rich history of Kedah

The Kedah State authority in charge of tourism has chosen to feature the famous Bujang Valley Archaeological Museum and Mount Jerai on its posters for next year’s ‘Discover Kedah 2016’ programme. Nalanda Founder Bro. Tan remarked that the posters featuring historical sites in Kedah were well-chosen as the state was rich in culture and heritage.

Nalandians join birthday fete at temple

Nalandians joined hundreds of well-wishers in paying tribute to Venerable Sri Saranankara Nayaka Thero, Abbot of Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple in Kuala Lumpur, on his 62nd birthday today.  Despite it being a working and schooling day, hundreds of devotees and students came to the temple since early morning to offer their humble wishes for Ven. Saranankara’s good health and long life.

Guided meditation with Ven. Asabhacara

On Wednesday 21 October, Venerable Sayadaw Asabhacara gave a guided meditation and Dhamma talk at Nalanda Centre.  In his talk, Ven. Asabhacara encouraged devotees to meditate diligently and maintain mindfulness in our daily activities.  Devotees also took the opportunity to clarify doubts on their daily practice during the Q & A session.

Meeting of national Buddhist federations

On 8 September, two major Buddhist federations in Malaysia – the Malaysian Buddhist Association (MBA) and the Theravada Buddhist Council of Malaysia (TBCM) – had a meeting in Subang Jaya to discuss recent issues and challenges affecting the Buddhist community in the country.

MP and State Assemblyman visit Nalanda

On Sunday 11 October, Nalanda Centre had the honour of welcoming our Member of Parliament for Puchong, Yang Berhormat Mr. Gobind Singh Deo, and Selangor State Assemblyman for Kinrara, Yang Berhormat Mr. Ng Sze Han, for an official visit.  The Yang Berhormats’ entourage was given a warm welcome by Nalanda members while touring the Centre.
