NEO Centre KL unscathed by fire next door

At approximately 10.20pm last night (14 April), Nalanda Centre received an emergency call reporting that thick black smoke was billowing from the roof of NEO Centre in Happy Garden. Nalanda officers who had just finished the Uposatha Day Evening Service rushed to the scene 13km away at Taman Gembira, Kuala Lumpur to investigate.

Nalanda Johor Bahru hosted Ven. Kumāra

Nalanda Johor Bahru Branch recently hosted Ven. Kumāra Bhikkhu from Sāsanārakkha Buddhist Sanctuary Taiping, from 7 to 10 April.  On Tuesday 8 April, Ven. Kumāra gave a Mandarin Dhamma talk at NEO Centre JB, with the title ‘如何面对负性思维和感受’ (“How to overcome negative thoughts and emotions” ).  The talk was most relevant as nowadays people are stretched and stressed beyond limit by many commitments and engagements.  The Shrine Hall was packed with devotees eager to enhance their well-being.

Pindacāra at Sri Petaling and Happy Garden Markets

On Saturday 5 April, Nalandians and devotees gathered at the Sri Petaling market for the first time there for the monthly Pindacāra (monks going on alms-round) despite the early morning drizzle.  We were honoured to have 3 venerables from the Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple to participate in the alms-round.

On Saturday 8 March, Bro. Tan conducted an “Introduction to Meditation” practical lesson at NEO Centre Johor Bahru to a capacity crowd. Bro. Tan first explained clearly what the meaning of ‘Dhamma-practice’ is, and how one makes progress therein.

Special Prayers in Serdang and JB for Victims of MH370

Nalandians gathered on 8-10 March for pūja and chanting to share merits with the casualties of flight MH370 that went missing, and which presumably crashed into sea.  The flight was a routine one from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board.  At this juncture, the circumstances surrounding the tragedy remain unclear.

Free School Classes commence in Johor Bahru

Nalanda Free School (NFS) classes started on Monday, 3 March at NEO Centre in Taman Johor Jaya.  The Centre became lively with enthusiasm and laughter of the teachers and students. Branch Chairman Bro.Yap, Deputy Chairperson Sis. Angie, and other officers were at hand to welcome volunteer teachers, parents and students to the first session.  NFS JB Branch Co-ordinator Sis. Ng Choy Hong gave all students a briefing before their lessons.

Delightful Pindacāra at O.U.G. and Happy Garden

On Saturday 1 March, devotees and volunteers participated joyfully in our monthly Pindacāra (monks going on alms-round) at Taman O.U.G. and Happy Garden morning markets.  At 7.30am, Nalandians gathered for the morning chanting at NEO Centre Happy Garden to calm their minds and reaffirm wholesome aspirations before embarking on the alms-round with the venerable bhikkhus.

Inaugural General Meeting of Johor Bahru Branch

The first Annual General Meeting of Nalanda Johor Bahru Branch was successfully held today at NEO Centre Johor Bahru.  At the meeting, members elected a team of leaders that retained the key officers – Chairman Bro. David Yap, Deputy Chairperson Sis. Angie Ng, Branch Secretary Sis. Ong Ai Geok, and Branch Treasurer Sis. Vivienne Ng.

Inaugural AGM for Sungai Petani Branch

The inaugural Nalanda Sungai Petani Branch’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) was successfully held on Saturday 22 February, at Cinta Sayang Resort, Kedah.  At the meeting, members elected a Management Committee to lead the branch for the next two years, headed by Chairman Bro. Khaw Seng Giap and Deputy Chairman Bro. Teoh Soon Liang.  Sis. Sumedha Lee is the new Branch Secretary, while Bro. Por Lee Tee was elected the Branch Treasurer.

Briefing for Volunteer Teachers at NEO Centre JB

On Sunday 19 January, a briefing session was organized for would-be volunteer teachers of Nalanda Free School (NFS) at NEO Centre Johor Bahru.  A dozen teachers have so far volunteered to teach a range of language and mathematics classes starting in March 2014.
