Wisdom Park Committee 18th Meeting

The Wisdom Park Development Committee (WPDC) held its 18th Meeting (and its first in 2017) on 15 January to discuss submission of building plans to the local authorities.  Committee members had a very fruitful discussion on technical details and time-line of development.

Exhibition on ‘Wisdom Park’ launched

A special exhibition on Wisdom Park was officially launched on Sunday 27 November at Nalanda Centre. The exhibition is held in honour of the first anniversary of Wisdom Park Development Committee (WPDC), which was formed in October 2015 and entrusted to conceptualise a “Master Development Plan” for Wisdom Park, reflecting its function as a national Buddhist education hub.

Scholar monks at Nalanda Centre

On Thursday 26 May, a group of 13 young monks from Sri Lanka visited Nalanda Centre to learn about Buddhist educational work in Malaysia.  These monks were among the best scholars in Pāli, Sanskrit and Sinhalese languages, having excelled in Sri Lankan national ‘Pirivena’ examinations and obtained the first places in those subjects.  They were accorded a special visit to Malaysia courtesy of Venerable Sri Saranankara Nayaka Thero of Sentul Temple.

Exhibition on Ven. K. Sri Dhammananda

In celebrating this year’s Wesak ‘Buddha Day’, Nalanda Dhamma School organised a special exhibition themed “A Beacon of Dhamma”, on the life and times of the late Venerable Dr. Kirinde Sri Dhammananda Nayaka Thero, who was Nalanda’s Spiritual Adviser.  Among the exhibits were writings, publications, and photographs of the late venerable, including rare records of his last years of life and his visits to Nalanda Centre.

Prioritise education over rituals on Wesak

Nalandians who attended the welcoming ceremony for the arrival of the Bamiyan Gandhāri manuscripts to Malaysia on 2 May also took the opportunity to visit another exposition held at the same venue.  The “Awakening Force” exhibition is being held at Samadhi Vihara Shah Alam in conjunction with this Wesak month.  The exhibition is organized by the Buddhist Missionary Society of Malaysia (BMSM), and will run until Wesak ‘Buddha Day’.

Ancient Gandhāri manuscripts exhibited in Malaysia

On Monday 2 May, Malaysian Buddhists had a rare glimpse of the Norwegian Schøyen collection of Gandhāri texts from Bamiyan.  The world-famous collection was on a special exhibition tour of ASEAN countries, facilitated by the international affairs department of the Sangha Council of Thailand.  The Malaysian leg was hosted at the Samadhi Vihara in Shah Alam.

Youths did well at ‘Family Fun Fair’

During the recent Nalanda ‘Family Fun Fair’, Nalandian youths embarked on a strong effort to reach out to the community of young Buddhists.  A ‘Youth Centre Canopy’ was set up comprising two sections: one section for Buddhist Societies from various universities to establish their stalls, and another section housing an exhibition themed “The Silver Lining”, which aimed to promote kindness.

Visitors to Nalanda Photography Exhibition

In the past few days, the “Passage through India” special photography exhibition which is on-going at Nalanda Centre continues to draw groups of visitors.  On 11 May, Ven. Sing Kan, the Abbess of Sam Poh Tong Temple in Ampang, came visiting with Ven. Pu Yi from Japan, as well as her two devotees.

Thank you for supporting Kindness

Dear friends, the on-line voting for the best photograph of the ‘Silver Lining’ Photography Competition is closed effective 8pm, 11th May.  In the week-long voting period from 5th to 11th May, 48,640 people viewed the photographs; 1,764 people voted on-line; and 8,387 votes were received in total.
