Cultivating a calm mind and understanding

On Thursday 29 October, devotees gathered at Nalanda Education & Outreach Centre in Kuala Lumpur for a Dhamma teaching by Ven. U Paññasāmi. The session began with guided mettā meditation, followed by a Dhamma talk and a question-and-answer session.

Venerable Paññasāmi briefly introduced samādhi and the first jhāna, including its five factors — initial application, sustained application, joy, happiness and one-pointedness of mind. He emphasised the importance of cultivating samādhi, or mental collectedness, as a foundation for wisdom. When the mind is calm and clear, we can better see things as they really are and recognise greed, hatred and delusion within ourselves.

Bhante also reminded us to cultivate mindfulness throughout daily life. Beyond formal sitting meditation, we can make use of small pockets of time — even ten minutes — to develop awareness and nurture our practice. These regular efforts help us bring the Dhamma into our everyday actions and responses.

We express our gratitude to Ven. U Paññasāmi for his compassionate guidance and practical encouragement. May we put these teachings into practice, steadily cultivating calmness, clarity and wisdom.
