Obituary – Venerable Prof. Dr. P. Gnanarama

It is with deep respect and a heavy heart that we announce the passing away of Venerable Professor Dr. Pategama Gnanarama Anunayaka Thero in Singapore earlier today; aged 88.  Ven. Gnanarama had been the Religious Adviser and resident teacher at Ti-Sarana Buddhist Association Singapore since 1993.

Peace & Harmony on ‘Buddha Day’

‘Buddha Day’ celebrations this year attracted thousands of devotees to Nalanda Centre to honour our great Teacher, the Buddha.  Although there were large numbers of people, everyone maintained peaceful minds in attending various Dhamma-learning programmes held over weeks.

Forum on Living Compassionately

On Sunday 12 May, Nalanda Institute organised the Mandarin Buddhist forum themed “Living Compassionately towards Peace & Harmony”.  The speakers at the forum were Abbot of Brahmavihara Monastery Ven. Dr. Dhammapala, local composer and musical producer Chow Kam Leong (周金亮), and business consultant Wong Kah Cane (黄家建).

Day of Calmness & Serenity for Youths

On Saturday 11 May, 104 participants joined the one-day meditation retreat conducted by Nalanda founder Bro. Tan and Nalanda Institute Director Achariya Tan Siang Chye.  The aim of the retreat is to introduce young adults to regular practice of meditation in order to free their minds from clutter.

Annual ‘Gimhāna Retreat’ B.E.2563

For seven weeks after the Buddha’s Enlightenment on Wesak full-moon in May, He contemplated on the Dhamma with His perfectly clear faculty of comprehension.  Then, He travelled for seven days from Bodhgaya to Sarnath, where He preached the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta on Asalha Day, the full-moon in July.

Dhamma Retreat for Singaporean friends

From 16 to 20 March, 34 friends came from Singapore for a special Dhamma retreat held at K. Sri Dhammananda Centre.  Nalanda founder Bro. Tan conducted five days of teachings and sutta study sessions which focussed on how we can live skilfully to cultivate wisdom and to gain clarity of purpose in life.

Meditation Retreat by Ven. Gavesi

Nalanda Centre is hosting a 5-day non-residential Meditation Retreat guided by Venerable Gavesi for beginners and intermediate meditators from 19 to 23 June.  This introductory meditation retreat is suitable for beginners, and is open for 30 adults who can attend the full course of five days.

Living Compassionately towards Peace and Harmony

The Full-moon day of Vesakhā month on 19 May is known as ‘Buddha Day’, and marks the beginning of Year 2563 of the Buddhist Era.  For Buddhists, ‘Buddha Day’ is not meant to be celebrated with merry-making.  This auspicious day is observed most meaningfully when Buddhists use the occasion to purify our minds, to reflect on the meaning and purpose of life, and to find out how we can achieve true happiness in our daily lives with the practice of Dhamma.
