Felicitations to Ven. H. Gunaratana

Nalanda Buddhist Society members extend our felicitations and warmest wishes to Venerable Sri Pandita Dr. Henepola Gunaratana Māha Nāyaka Thero on his 88th birthday, today!  Popularly known as ‘Bhante G’, Ven. Gunaratana is a renowned Buddhist meditation teacher and author of several influential works, such as the best-selling ‘Mindfulness in Plain English’.

Nalanda welcomes new members

On Sunday 22 November, Nalandians in the Klang Valley gathered for their monthly Members’ Day at Nalanda Centre, Sri Serdang.  It is always a happy occasion when members meet to catch up on the Society’s happenings.  Nalanda President Sis. Evelyn took the opportunity to welcome two new members to the Society – Sis. Poh Peng and Sis. Jia Xin – and presented them with the Nalanda’s ‘Rules & Constitution’ booklet.

Abbot of Jing Long Shan visits Nalanda

The Abbot of Jing Long Shan Temple, Venerable Wen Tong (文通法师), visited Nalanda Centre for the first time on Monday, 23 November.  He was accompanied by Ven. Zhang Deng (章灯法师), President of Serdang Buddhist Association Bro.Yap, and Jing Long Shan Committee Member Bro. Roger Tan.  Jing Long Shan is a huge, established Buddhist temple located in Rawang, Selangor.

Ulu Tiram students visit Nalanda Centre

On Saturday 21 November, a group of Dhamma School students and six teachers from the Ulu Tiram Buddhist Association in Johor visited Nalanda Centre.   They have been planning the visit for a few months and was looking forward to their trip.  Nalanda officers gave the guests a warm welcome and took them on an educational tour of the Centre where they also learned about Buddhist culture and history.

Remember Paris – with a prayer for peace

An official memorial service will be held today at Les Invalides in Paris to remember the 130 innocent victims of the recent terrorist attacks there.  The remembrance will be attended by French leaders and the families of those unfortunate civilians. Let us offer our prayers to those who died in this tragic event.  May they rest in Peace.

Wise reflections for daily life

On Sunday 22 November, Bro. Benny Liow gave a talk on ‘Reflections for Daily Life’.  In his talk, he said the Buddha taught two types of reflection (attention) – wise reflection (‘yoniso manasikāra’) and unwise reflection (‘ayoniso manasikāra‘).

4th National Members’ Convention

24 – 27 December 2015 | Sungai Petani, Kedah

Calling all Nalanda members!  The 4th National Members’ Convention will be held a month from today in Sungai Petani, Kedah.  This will be the first time our National Convention is held outside Sri Serdang.  Nalandians have good reason to head north next month as we celebrate the completion and inauguration of Nalanda Education & Outreach Centre in Sungai Petani.

Firefly Mission visits Nalanda

On 10 November, Nalandians were delighted to welcome 38 members of the Firefly Mission Singapore, led by its President, Dr. Ng Yee Kong.  They were returning from their annual trip to Sasanarakkha Buddhist Sanctuary in Taiping for the ‘Kathina’ celebrations.  They had picked an auspicious day to visit as it was also Deepavali.

Replica of Buddhist masterpiece in Kuala Lumpur

The next time you visit Brickfields area, look out for a replica of the Buddhist masterpiece of Sanchi right here in the heart of Kuala Lumpur!  The original structure of the ‘Torana’ (ceremonial gate) at the Great Stupa of Sanchi in Madhya Pradesh, India was built by Emperor Asoka Moriya 2,300 years ago to honour the Lord Buddha.  It is one of the most elaborate and impressive Buddhist archeological findings in the world.
