Cultivating wholesome acts of giving

On Saturday 19 September, the monthly educational ‘Pindacāra’ programme (monks going on alms-round) was joyfully held at Seri Kembangan market.  Our friendly “People Engagement” team was actively engaging with traders and devotees at the market.  Leaflets explaining what ‘Pindacāra’ was about were also distributed to on-lookers.

Remembering our teacher – Ven. K. Anuruddha

Today marks the second anniversary of Venerable Kakkapalliye Anuruddha’s passing.  The late Venerable Anuruddha was Nalanda Founder Bro. Tan’s Dhamma and Pāli Language teacher.  Although a foremost and distinguished scholar in Pāli language and literature, and having been the first Vice-Chancellor of the Buddhist & Pāli University of Sri Lanka, the late Professor Anuruddha lived most of his life in seclusion.  His funeral was a very simple affair in accordance to his last wish, much in character with this humble bhikkhu.

Tribute to Acharya S. N. Goenka

Today marks the second anniversary of renowned meditation teacher, Acharya Satya Narayan Goenka’s passing on 29 September 2013.  Nalanda Buddhist Society would like to pay tribute to a prodigious teacher who had created the conditions for millions of practitioners to experience the technique and bliss of ‘Vipassana Meditation’ first taught by the Buddha 2,600 years ago.

Rebirth? – I have been here before

On Sunday 20 September, Bro. Ananda Fong gave a talk on “Rebirth”.  He related a few Buddhist accounts of rebirth, besides showing scientific research on the subject by Dr. Ian Stevenson and Dr. Brian Weiss.  In ‘Majjhima Nikāya’ No. 41 the ‘Saleyyaka Sutta’, the Buddha elaborated on why some beings after death reappear in happy or unhappy destinations.  It is through righteous conduct in accordance with the Dhamma that beings are born in fortunate realms.

‘Ten Wholesome Deeds’ explained

On Sunday 20 September, Sis. Tan Yee Yong conducted Lecture 3 of BPS 101 course – Buddhist Studies in Mandarin – on the topic of “Ten Wholesome Deeds” (‘Dasa Kusala Kamma’).  She began the session by explaining the beneficial results of practising the ten wholesome actions that lead us to a happy life.

Visit by Venerable Bhikkhunis

On Wednesday 16 September, Venerable Bhikkhuni Anulā, Bhikkhuni  Medhā and Bhikkhuni  Sumangalā visited Nalanda Centre accompanied by Sis. Tan Yee Yong.  The Director of Nalanda Centre Sis. Nandini, and Director of Dhamma School Sis. Sunanda, warmly welcomed the venerable nuns.  Sis. Nandini brought the venerables on a brief tour of Nalanda Centre and Youth Centre.

On Wednesday 16 September, Nalanda President Sis. Evelyn Chow, Deputy President Bro. Charlie, Director of Nalanda Centre Sis. Nandini, Youth Leader Bro. Disheng and Officer Sis. Chooi were invited to witness the inauguration ceremony of the new Serdang Buddhist Association building.

Lead and Make a Change!

The Fellowship Undergraduate Network (F.U.N.) organised by Nalanda Youth Centre will be back this October!  F.U.N. is meant for Buddhist undergraduates and youths to learn leadership skills and at the same time, to interact with other young Buddhists from various universities and colleges.  Through this programme, participants are given the training to be an effective leader through courses and activities.  It is a lively session that encourages positive interaction, learning and laughter!
