Deadly earthquake struck Iran-Iraq

A powerful earthquake shook the border region in Kermanshah Province of Iran and Iraq’s Kurdish region on Sunday 12 November, causing at least 500 deaths and more than 8,000 injuries.  The earthquake was measured at 7.3 on the Richter Scale, and is the deadliest so far in 2017.

K. Sri Dhammananda Centre progress

‘Nalanda House’ was formally handed over to the appointed contractors on 9 September.  Demolition of the building began on 19 September and took 3 weeks to complete.  The old foundation was also dug up in order for piling work to commence.

Donation drive to assist flood victims

Theravāda Buddhist Council of Malaysia (TBCM) and Malaysian Buddhist Association (MBA) are jointly coordinating a flood relief campaign to collect donations to assist victims of the ongoing flooding in Penang and Kedah.  The flood is the most serious to have hit the northern states in decades.

Notice of November E.G.M.

Members of Nalanda Buddhist Society Malaysia registered at Sri Serdang headquarters are requested to attend an Extraordinary General Meeting (E.G.M.) to discuss proposed amendments to the Constitution and the Society’s development plans.  Official notice to members have been sent out on 27 October 2017.  We look forward to welcoming all members back to our ‘spiritual home’ at Nalanda Centre to chart our future together.  Thank you.

Nalanda Bulletin Issue no. 42 (November 2017) is now available for collection from Nalanda Centre Sri Serdang or any of our branch centres.  This latest issue highlights important events at Nalanda in August, September and October, including news on two impactful national camps for 200 Buddhist youths and 150 Dhamma School teachers respectively.

Obituary – Farewell Aunty Tan

It is with deep respects that we announce the passing of a distinguished member of the Malaysian Buddhist community, Mdm. Chin Kim Lan, or better known to us as ‘Aunty Tan’, on Saturday 28 October 2017 in Kuala Lumpur.  Her funeral will be held on Wednesday 1 November, at 1.00pm.  Aunty Tan is the beloved mother of Nalanda Institute Director, Achariya Tan Siang Chye.

Visit by Firefly Mission Singapore

On Saturday 21 October, 80 members of Firefly Mission from Singapore led by their President Dr. Ng Yee Kong visited Nalanda Centre as part of their ‘Kathina’ season merit-making tour of Malaysia.  It was Firefly’s sixth consecutive year visiting Nalanda, and one of the events Nalandians look forward to annually.

Day of remembrance and gratitude

Thursday 31 August marked the 11th anniversary of the passing of Nalanda’s late spiritual adviser, Venerable K. Sri Dhammananda, as well as being Malaysia’s 60th National Day.  Nalanda founder Bro. Tan delivered a Dhamma talk on gratitude to commemorate these two occasions.
