Observing the ‘Vassa’ – Annual Rains Retreat

Beginning the day after the full-moon of Asalha month (around July every year), Theravada Buddhist monks are required to observe Vassana or ‘Rains Retreat’ for a duration of 3 months.  The Vassana period from July-August to October-November corresponds with the monsoon season in South and Southeast Asia (which were historically Buddhist strongholds), thus making traveling very difficult and even dangerous.  Monks and nuns were often invited by Buddhist communities to reside in village Aramas (monasteries and nunneries) for the duration of the ‘rains’.

Āsālha Full-moon Day falls exactly 2 months after Wesak Day.  It marks the three important events in the history of Buddhism – the day Buddha Gotama was conceived; the day He renounced worldly life to become an ascetic; and most importantly, the day He first preached the Dhamma as the Enlightened Teacher.

Joyful service at Ariya Charity Food & Family Fair

Since this morning, Nalanda members and volunteers have been volunteering their time and service at Ariya Charity Food & Family Fair at Menara KEN in Taman Tun Dr. Ismail.  The Fair is currently on-going until 3pm today, to raise funds for the construction of the 1st Malaysian Theravada Bhukkuni Nunnery & Dhamma Training Centre.

Āsāḷha Full-moon ‘Dhamma Day’ Observance

Āsāḷha Full-moon, also known as Dhamma Day, is a significant Buddhist occasion marking the anniversary of the Buddha's first sermon (the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta) to His first five disciples at Deer Park in Isipatana, two full moons after His Enlightenment. On this day, the ‘Wheel of Dhamma’ was set in motion when the Buddha expounded the Four Noble Truths – of ‘Dukkha’ (suffering); its cause; its cessation; and the Path to its cessation, which form the foundation of Buddhist teachings.

Families experience the joy of Dhamma at stay-in programme

From 27 to 29 June, over 80 participants and volunteers from Nalanda Dhamma Schools in Serdang, Kuala Lumpur, and Johor Bahru came together at Wisdom Park for a Family Stay-in Programme. Themed “Joy of Dhamma”, this meaningful gathering allowed families from different regions to connect through shared learning, reflection, and wholesome fun in a peaceful setting.

Exploring Factors of Awakening on Asalha new-moon

On Wednesday 25 June, Nalanda members and devotees gathered for the Uposatha Evening Service at Nalanda Centre which featured a Dhamma sharing on ‘The Seven Factors of Awakening’ by Bro. Tan Siang Chye. The Buddha’s teachings enable one to see things clearly without bias, and give rise to understanding and wisdom. This awakening of the mind, requires one to train the undeveloped mind and undertake Bodhipakkhiyā Dhamma, the 37 factors of enlightenment.
