Are intelligent people happier?

David Robson has published an insightful article at BBC’s webpage on why some smart people are also sad people!  In his essay ‘The downside of being clever’, he pointed out the limitations and even ‘dangers’ of intelligence.  Instead of training our children to be more ‘intelligent’, or trying to recruit ‘intelligent employees’, he recommends turning our minds to develop an age-old quality: “wisdom”.  Read this ‘smart’ article here: http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20150413-the-downsides-of-being-clever

Ordinary folks; Everyday lives

Besides showcasing Buddhist heritage and culture, the “Passage through India” Special Exhibition at Nalanda Centre will also feature some wonderful photographs of ordinary folks engaging in everyday activities.  The exhibition is scheduled from 1 to 3 May, in conjunction with Wesak ‘Buddha Day’ celebrations.  Admission is free, and all are welcome!

3rd National Members’ Convention

Nalanda Buddhist Society members nationwide are invited to participate in the 3rd National Members’ Convention to be held over three days – from 1 to 3 May 2015.  There will be talks by leaders and Dhamma teachings aplenty since the Convention falls on Wesak ‘Buddha Day’.

Passage of Time through India

Seeing the Colours of India

A lone scarecrow amidst a beautiful sea of yellow – fields of mustard flowers are a common sight in Northern India during winter months.  Photographer Paul Cher captured this scenery among many others during his month-long sojourn in India with Bro.Tan earlier this year.  A selection of meaningful photographs of temples and people will be exhibited for the first time at Nalanda Centre Sri Serdang from 1 to 3 May, in conjunction with Wesak Observance.

Being ‘Good Practitioners’ of Dhamma

On Thursday 2 April, Nalanda welcomed Ven. Dr. T. Sangharatana Nāyaka Thero to talk on how to be ‘Good Practitioners’.  Ven. Sangharatana said that the teaching of all Buddhas is to ‘avoid doing evil actions, to cultivate wholesome deeds and to develop mental abilities’.  Buddhists are reminded to be mindful of our actions – whether physical, verbal or mental – at all times.
