Honouring our departed relatives in ‘Cheng Beng’ Observance

Today, the Chinese community celebrates ‘Cheng Beng’ (or ‘Qing Ming’, 清明节), a custom when people pay tribute to their ancestors through food offerings and by ‘sweeping tombs’. A tradition which originated over two thousand years ago in China, the word ‘Cheng Beng’ means "pure brightness", coinciding with the beginning of spring when the sun shines brightly.

Members rejoice at 19th AGM

The 19th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Nalanda Buddhist Society Malaysia was successfully held on Sunday, 20 March at Nalanda Centre Sri Serdang.  Members received reports detailing the  Society’s programmes in 2021 and discussed plans for the coming year, as the country starts to open up from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Pray for Wuzhou Plane Crash Victims

Just two weeks after the 8th anniversary of MH370’s disappearance, another tragic air-crash has taken place in Wuzhou, China. The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAA) has confirmed that Flight MU5735 of China Eastern Airlines crashed in a mountainous region in Wuzhou of Guangxi province. The plane was carrying 132 people on board including 123 passengers and 9 crew members.

Today, 18 March is Nalanda Patron’s Day

‘Nalanda Patron’s Day’ is an annual programme to commemorate and appreciate all donors, benefactors and volunteers who have contributed tremendously to the growth of Nalanda, and by extension, to the development of Buddhist education.  On ‘Patron’s Day’, Nalanda members and devotees offer pūja for the well-being of our benefactors, past and present.  We also transfer merits to those who have passed away.

History has shown that even powerful men were greatly influenced by their mothers during childhood, and grew up inheriting much of the values imparted matrilineally.  It is important to understand this matrilineal influence on the development of children, so that we could apply it to benefit humanity infinitely.

MH370 – 8th Anniversary, 8 March

Today marks the 8th anniversary of Malaysia Airlines MH370′s mysterious disappearance over the Indian Ocean.  Even after eight years of intensive and extensive search, the main wreckage of the B777 aircraft is still not found.  Family and friends of those lost are still in anguish over not knowing the actual fate of their loved ones.
