Children invited to ‘Family Fun Fair’

We are happy to share that children from Siddharthan Care Centre are again coming to take part in this year’s Nalanda’s ‘Family Fun Fair’.  As part of its CSR Programme, the Kemaman Bitumen Co. Sdn Bhd has kindly offered the home coupons to purchase food, clothes and stationeries at the Fair.  Representatives of the company together with Nalandian officers went to Siddharthan Care Centre to present the coupons on 18 June.

We’re almost there, folks

It’s just a few days left to the much-anticipated annual “Family Fun Fair” on Sunday, 31 July. Nalanda Centre has been a hive of activity the whole month as members and volunteers came in batches to help out whenever they can. To date, overall preparations are 86% completed. Certain sections have accomplished even more – with the road-show team having achieved 95%, publicity team 93%, and stall allocation team 99%.

Nalandians ready for ‘Family Fun Fair’

After weeks of preparations, Nalandians are now ready to host the annual “Family Fun Fair” next Sunday – on 31 July.  Well, ‘almost’ ready!  There are certainly finer details to be looked into, but by and large, the Fun Fair organizing team and volunteers have done a remarkable job in completing 80% of preparatory work.  Sadhu anumodana!

Ven. Dhammavuddho’s talk at Nalanda

On Sunday 19 June, Nalanda was honoured by the presence of Venerable Dhammavuddho Māhathera, founder and abbot of Vihāra Buddha Gotama in Temoh, Perak, to give a talk on the ‘Qualities of a Wise man’. His talk coincided with the third week of Nalanda’s Gimhāna Retreat, and thus it was an inspiring sight to see the Dhamma Hall packed with devotees who came to listen to the venerable in person.

Passing of Ven. Polpitiya Kassapa

We are saddened to announce the passing away of Venerable Polpitiya Kassapa Nāyaka Thero, meditation teacher and founder of Rockhill Hermitage, Sri Lanka, on Monday, 18 July 2016.  He was a disciple of the Most Venerable Balangoda Ananda Maitreya Māha Nāyaka Thera, one of the most renowned Theravada monks of the 20th century.

Lively prelude to Family Fun Fair

Over the past two weekends, a Family Fun Fair ‘Pre-sales’ campaign was being held at Nalanda House (opposite Nalanda Centre) in Sri Serdang, offering food, beverages, household items and children’s wear for sale.  Among the most popular items on pre-sale were Chinese herbal products, tea sets, and delicious almond cookies sponsored by a well-known local confectioner.

Asalha full-moon is ‘Dhamma Day’

Today is the full-moon day of Asalha month, which marks the occasion when the Buddha first taught the Dhamma after His Enlightenment.  He spoke about the ‘Four Noble Truths’ – of ‘Dukkha’ (suffering); its causes; its cessation; and the Path to its cessation – to His first five disciples at Isipatana.  That sermon which the Buddha gave became known as the famed ‘Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta’ – the ‘Discourse on turning the Wheel of Dhamma’.

2nd Anniversary of MH17

It has been two years since the tragic downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over Eastern Ukraine on 17 July 2014, while on a scheduled flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.  The great loss of 298 innocent lives from that incident, and 239 lives from the earlier MH370 calamity, had cast a pall over Malaysia ever since.  Our nation is still reeling from the trauma of this double catastrophe.

‘Dhammacakka Day’ at Nalanda

Tomorrow*, we will be observing ‘Dhammacakka Day’ at Nalanda Centre.  There will be the customary offerings, meditation, and recitation of the celebrated “Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta” – the Buddha’s inaugural discourse after Enlightenment on the Four Noble Truths.

Wildlife needs adequate space, too

A mountain goat in Alaska leaped into the ocean and drowned after photo-taking onlookers crowded the wild animal in the harbour town of Seward, 209km south of capital Anchorage. The goat’s appearance at the harbour was unusual and caused a stir, said an Alaskan Department of Public Safety spokesman.  Mountain goats are often seen in the cliffs above the tourist town, but not in the town itself, he added.
