Tribute to Nelson Mandela

Today marks the first anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s passing.  He was a freedom fighter, (and later) the President of South Africa, and the voice of conscience for his nation.  To the rest of the world, Mandela was an icon of liberation from oppression, and of reconciliation with your former oppressors.  We humbly pay tribute to one of the most remarkable men of the modern era who brought peace and equality to millions of appreciative people!

Nalanda Leaders meet in Serdang

During the most recent Board of Management meeting on 14 November, Nalanda President Bro. Lee Kong Foo invited Founder Bro. Tan and the Chairmen of Nalanda’s 3 branches in Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Sungai Petani to attend the session.  It was the perfect occasion for a ‘family gathering’ as the Nalandian officers freely exchanged ideas and got updated on the Society’s upcoming programmes.

Nalanda Building Progress – 200th day

Today marks the 200th day since the Nalanda Centre Building Expansion Project began in mid-May.  Overall work is 95% completed and is on schedule to finish this month – in time for Nalanda Dharma School’s 10th Anniversary Celebration and the 2nd National Members’ Convention!

Service Sunday and appreciation luncheon

On Sunday 16 November, a fortnight after the successful hosting of ‘Xuan Zang – Journey to the West’ musical, a special Service Sunday and volunteer appreciation luncheon was held at Nalanda Centre.  The simple celebration was to express gratitude and appreciation to all volunteers who contributed towards the success of the Musical.  It was also an occasion to offer a special blessing service to Bro. Tan and his entourage who were leaving on a pilgrimage to India and Nepal the next morning.

‘Pindacāra’ in Seri Kembangan

On Saturday 15 November, devotees and volunteers gathered at the Seri Kembangan morning market for our monthly ‘Pindacāra’ (monks going on alms-round).  On this morning, four members from Nalanda Sungai Petani Branch joined the ‘Pindacāra’ programme for the first time.  They were eager to learn and to experience the joy of helping out at the ‘Pindacāra’ programme.

Experiencing Joy on ‘Sangha Day’ at Nalanda

Nalanda Buddhist Society observed our annual ‘Sangha Day’ on Sunday, 9 November.  On this important occasion, the Buddhist laity took the opportunity to express gratitude and support for the Sangha (monastic community) by offering robes and other requisites, thus practising generosity and humility through the acts of giving.

On Saturday 1 November, Nalanda hosted ‘Xuan Zang – Journey to the West’ musical at Istana Budaya.  More than 1,200 guests had a wonderful time attending the musical and were inspired by the true identity of Master Xuan Zang.

Harmonious gathering of Nalandians

On Sunday 2 November, Nalandians from Sri Serdang, Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Sungai Petani Branches gathered at Nalanda Centre for Service Sunday.  After Service Sunday, Nalandians gathered for some updates on the latest developments of the Society.  Bro. Tan shared about the progress of the Nalanda Centre Expansion Project and some upcoming programmes.  Branch representatives also took this opportunity to update members on the progress of the programmes carried out by their respective branches.

Cheerful Singapore BF members visit Nalanda

On Sunday 2 November, just days after the visit by 90 Firefly Mission members, Nalanda was again honoured by the presence of another Singaporean group – a party of 40 cheerful Buddhist Fellowship (BF) members.  Led by its Deputy President Bro. Jerry Ong, the group was in Kuala Lumpur to watch “Xuan Zang – Journey to the West” musical.

Keat Hwa School students visit Nalanda

On Saturday 1 November, a group of 38 students and 2 teachers from the Buddhist Society of Keat Hwa Secondary School in Alor Star, made a half-day visit to Nalanda Centre.  They were warmly received by Nalandians, and thereafter everyone joyfully listened to a Dhamma sharing by Sis. Nandini Tan.
